Dolphyn Hydrogen and Partners Successfully Advance the Pioneering Milford Haven: Hydrogen Kingdom Project, in the Celtic Sea
With the support of InnovateUK, Dolphyn Hydrogen and its partners, Celtic Sea Power, Wales & West Utilities and Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult, have completed a series of pre-development studies for the Milford Haven: Hydrogen Kingdom (MH:HK) project.
MH:HK uses Dolphyn’s patented process as the anchor technology, and would produce electrolytic hydrogen from floating offshore wind (FLOW) at a commercial scale, with no requirement for a grid connection. Deployment would represent a world-first for this type of technology, which would help cement the place of Wales and the UK at the forefront of global clean energy transition.
A Catalyst for the UK’s Hydrogen Economy
MH:HK delivers a scalable model for offshore hydrogen production, de-risking future investments and accelerating the roll-out of floating wind and marine energy projects in the Celtic Sea. The project supports the UK’s ambition to double down on clean energy industries, drive industrial decarbonisation, and become a world-leading exporter of low-carbon technologies, including hydrogen.
Key Outcomes Associated with Deployment:
- First-of-a-kind deployment: MH:HK would be the first commercial-scale project to produce green hydrogen offshore from floating wind, supporting the UK’s Hydrogen Strategy and net zero ambitions.
- Economic impact: The project is expected to deliver £1.6 billion in gross value added (GVA) over 20 years, create over 1,200 high value jobs, and stimulate significant inward investment in the region.
- Strategic alignment: MH:HK is embedded in national and regional decarbonisation plans, including the Celtic Freeport, South Wales Industrial Cluster, and HyLine Cymru hydrogen corridor.
- Social value and skills: The project has invested in STEM education, skills development, and community engagement, supporting a just transition and future workforce for green industries.
- Supply chain growth: MH:HK has engaged over 600 supply chain partners, targeting more than 50% local content and supporting the development of a world-class clean energy cluster in South Wales.
